Worship Teaching

This past Sunday I was privileged to be able to share the platform and teach with Pastor David for a few minutes. Here are my notes and thoughts I shared:

Point #1
Worship is a
Response. A Response to Who God Is and What God has done.

It is just like putting a pot on the stove. The water doesn't boil on its own. The burner causes the water to respond by boiling. We worship God as a response to seeing who God is and what God has done!

I grew up being told I was supposed to worship God but I was never really taught much about it, so you could look at a verse like Romans 12:1 "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship", and be overwhelmed.

At first it can feel detached... like we're being told to worship but not filled in on the details...

But when you back up into Romans 11 you see the why, it describes what God has done and who God is. That is why Romans 12:1 starts with "therefore", because worship is a response to who God is and what God has done.

However, its funny that we take this for granted. We are aware of God! Yet we don't think about how profound that is. God the God of all and above everything allows us to be aware of Him! How incredibly awe-inspiring is that? And that leads to my second point.

Point #2
If God
Didn’t, We Couldn’t. Because God Did, We Can.

If God didn't reveal Himself to us, we wouldn't be able to worship Him. You can look through the Psalms just for a few examples of seeing God...

Psalm8:1-4 is a great example:

"Psalm 8:
1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?"

What is man that God is mindful of us? And my point is, what is man that He lets us be mindful of Him?

Point #3
Jesus is God’s Greatest Revelation.

There are 2 main kinds of revelation. No, I'm not talking about the book at the end of the bible that talks about Armageddon! I'm talking about the ways God reveals that He is God.

First there is General Revelation. This is mainly Creation. When we look around we see creation and are drawn to believe there is something or someone above us.

Second is Special Revelation. This includes miracles, the Bible... but the most specific special revelation of God is Jesus. Jesus is God's Greatest Revelation to us!

He comes and takes on our flesh, lives, dies, rises, redeems and frees.

When we See what Jesus has done, we more fully See who God is.

And in response we worship!
